School Sports Newfoundland and Labrador:
Provincial high school track and
field championships this weekend
School Sports Newfoundland and Labrador wraps up
its 2004-05 athletic season this coming weekend as student-athletes head to
Stephenville for the Provincial High School Track and Field Championships. Over
175 student-athletes from all over the province will be competing for team and
individual honours.
Championship banners will be awarded to the team accumulating the most points
for boys and girls. Vying for the team championship for the girls will be the
host, Stephenville High, Holy Heart of Mary High (St. John�s), Holy Trinity High
(Torbay), Baltimore High (Ferryland) and Marystown Central High. In the boys
division Stephenville High will be joined by Holy Heart of Mary, Baltimore High,
Marystown High and O�Donel High (Mount Pearl).
In addition to the team championships, champions will also be declared for male
and female in the following events: 100m, 200m, 400m, 800m, 1,500m, 3,000m,
500m, racewalk, high jump, long jump, discus, shot put, javelin, 4 x 100 relay
and 4 x 400 relay. Individuals who have finished in the top three in their
individual events at their regional meet have qualified for the provincial
championships. The following schools will be represented in the individual
events, Prince of Wales Collegiate and Booth Memorial (both St. John�s), Holy
Spirit High (Manuels), Ascension Collegiate (Bay Roberts), Baccalieu Collegiate
(Old Perlican), Clarenville High, Mealy Mountain Collegiate (Happy Valley-Goose
Bay), Menihek High (Labrador City), Viking Trail Academy (Plum Point),
Piccadilly High, E.A. Butler High (McKays), Belanger High (Doyles) and Regina
High (Corner Brook). The meet gets underway 9:30 Saturday morning and continues
throughout the day.
In its continuing effort to emphasize sportsmanship, School Sports Newfoundland
and Labrador, are sponsoring the Sportsmanship First Program. Each team will
nominate an individual player to receive an individual sportsmanship medal.
The top teams will be rewarded with gold and silver medals, while the winner of
the championship game will also receive the coveted Championship Banner. In the
individual events, individual gold, silver and bronze medals will be awarded.
All the School Sports Newfoundland and Labrador tournaments are sponsored by
School Milk Foundation/Dairy Farmers of Newfoundland.
