School Sports Newfoundland and
Labrador holding island
3A badminton and boys and girls ball hockey provincial tournaments this weekend
School Sports Newfoundland and Labrador will
sponsor three provincial high school championships this coming weekend.
Champions will be declared in boys and girls ball hockey for the first time.
Individual and team champions will be declared in island 3A badminton.
The boys ball hockey provincials are being hosted by Ascension Collegiate in Bay
Roberts. Eight teams are in contention for the first championship banner awarded
in this sport. Division A will see action from the host, Ascension Collegiate,
Marystown Central High, Glovertown Academy and Stephenville High. Playing round
robin games in Division B will be O�Donel High (Mount Pearl), Discovery
Collegiate (Bonavista), Exploits Valley High (Grand Falls-Windsor) and Harriot
Curtis Collegiate (St. Anthony). Games get underway at 11 am Friday and continue
throughout the day. Saturday morning games start with the consolation games and
are followed by the semi-finals featuring the top two teams from each division.
The championship game is scheduled for 12:30 Saturday.
St. Joseph�s Academy in Lamaline is hosting the provincial girls ball hockey
championships. Eight teams are also involved in this tournament which will be
run as a straight round robin tournament. In addition to the host, St. Joseph�s,
the following teams are involved in the tournament: Crescent Collegiate (Blaketown),
Stephenville High, Christ the King School (Rushoon), Carbonear Collegiate,
Mushuau Innu Natuashish School (Natuashish), Discovery Collegiate (Bonavista)
and Fogo Island Central High. The first game is scheduled for 12 noon on Friday
and the round robin continues all day Friday with the last game at 8:30. The
schedule resumes 8:45 Saturday morning and continues throughout the day with the
last round robin game set for 3 o�clock. The top four teams advance to the
playoffs with 1 playing 4 and 2 playing 3 followed by the championship game at
5:30.
Canon Richards High in Flowers Cove is the host school for the island 3A
badminton tournament. The 3A provincial badminton tournament is being held at
Menihek High in Labrador City. Whenever we have a provincial tournament in
Labrador, an island tournament is held to determine the representative from the
island who will go on to compete against the zone winning schools in Labrador.
Teams involved in the island 3A badminton tournament include Canon Richards, St.
Marks School (Kings Cove), St. Peters Academy (Westport), Belanger Memorial (Doyles)
and Holy Cross (Daniels Harbour). Individual athletes from St. Mary�s All Grade
(Mary�s Harbour) and Main River Academy (Pollards Point). The team competition
will take place on Friday with a round robin competition between the schools.
Each encounter will consist of five matches - one each of boys singles, girls
singles, boys doubles, girls doubles and mixed doubles. The winner of three out
of five will win the encounter. The individual competition will go ahead on
Saturday. Individual champions will be declared in boys singles, girls singles,
boys doubles, girls doubles and mixed doubles.
In its continuing effort to emphasize sportsmanship, School Sports Newfoundland
and Labrador, are sponsoring the Sportsmanship First Program. In addition to the
Team Sportsmanship Award, each team will nominate an individual player to
receive an individual sportsmanship medal.
The top teams will be rewarded with gold and silver medals, while the winner of
the championship game will also receive the coveted championship banner. In
badminton, individual gold, silver and bronze medals will be awarded.
All the School Sports Newfoundland and Labrador tournaments are sponsored by
School Milk Foundation/Dairy Farmers of Newfoundland.
