The following is being distributed at the request of School Sports Newfoundland and Labrador:

Three provincial girls basketball and two boys hockey provincial tournaments this weekend

School Sports Newfoundland and Labrador has a very busy weekend lined up this coming weekend. Five provincial champions will be crowned on Saturday in two sports at venues across the province.

St. Lawrence Academy and Holy Name of Mary Academy in Lawn are co-hosting the Girls 2A basketball tournament. Eight teams have qualified through their respective region for this event. Games will be played at two venues with the Blue Division playing out of St. Lawrence and the Wine Division playing out of Lawn. In the Blue Division, Stella Maris High (Trepassey), St. Mark�s High (Kings Cove), D.C. Young School (Port Hope Simpson), and St. Lawrence Academy will face off. Competing against the other host in the Wine Division will be Lakewood Academy (Glenwood), Belanger Memorial (Doyles) and St. Mary�s All Grade (Mary�s Harbour).

Games get underway 4 p.m. on Thursday at both sites. Each team will play one round robin game Thursday, followed by two on Friday. Friday�s games are set for 9 a.m., 10:45, 1:30 and 3:15. The top two teams from each division will advance to the crossovers on Saturday morning. The winners of those games will play in the championship game at 12:30 to determine the 2A Girls Provincial Basketball champions.

The 3A champions for Girls Basketball will be determined in Twillingate on Saturday evening. Six teams are vying for this title. The tournament will be played in a two division set up, featuring the host, J. M. Olds Collegiate (Twillingate), Viking Trail Academy (Plum Point) and Fogo Island Central High in the Blue Division. The orange division will consist of Fatima Academy (St. Brides), Baie Verte High and Baltimore High (Ferryland).

The opening ceremonies is set for Thursday at 5 p.m. followed by the opening game. The round robin divisional games finish up Friday evening. The top two teams from the round robin receive a bye into the semi-final. The second and third place teams play off in the quarter final action. All playoff games will be played Saturday. Bronze medal game will be played at 4 p.m. followed by the championship game at 6 p.m.

Mobile Central High School in Mobile is the host school for the Girls 4A Basketball championships. Eight teams will be vying for the coveted championship banner in this event as well. Division A will see action between Roncalli High (Avondale), Mount Pearl Senior High, St. Kevin�s High (Goulds) and Lewisporte Collegiate. Playing in Division B will be Gonzaga High (St. John�s), Laval High (Placentia), Mobile High and Herdman Collegiate (Corner Brook). The schedule gets underway 9 a.m., Thursday morning, with round robin games running throughout Thursday and Friday. The top two teams from each division will advance to the crossovers scheduled for 9 and 10:45 Saturday morning. The championship game will be played 3:30 Saturday afternoon.

While the girls are on the court this weekend, the boys take to the ice. Two provincial boys hockey championships will be played this coming weekend. The 3A boys championships is being hosted by Lester Pearson Memorial in Wesleyville. Facing off in Division A will be Harriot Curtis Collegiate (St. Anthony), Stella Maris Academy (Trepassey), Indian River High (Springdale) and the host Lester Pearson Memorial. Competing for top honors in Division B will be Elwood High (Deer Lake), Roncalli High (Port Saunders), J. M. Olds Collegiate (Twillingate) and Botwood Collegiate.

The tournament gets underway 8 a.m., Thursday and round robin games continue throughout Thursday and Friday. The top teams play off in the semi-finals 10 and 12 on Saturday. The championship game is set for 7 p.m., Saturday.

Regina High in Corner Brook will host the 4A hockey tournament. Eight teams will be competing for the provincial title as well as the historic Boyle Trophy. Competing in Pool A will be Bishops College (St. John�s), Gonzaga High (St. John�s), Discovery Collegiate (Bonavista) and Stephenville High. Joining the host, Regina High in Pool B will be Gander Collegiate, Ascension Collegiate (Bay Roberts) and Mount Pearl Senior High. Each team will play one round robin game on Thursday at both the Kinsmen Arena and the Main Arena. The remainder of the round robin schedule will be played Friday at both venues. The semi finals will be played at 9 and 9:30 Saturday morning followed by a 3 p.m. championship game.

In its continuing effort to emphasize sportsmanship, School Sports Newfoundland and Labrador, in conjunction with Crime Stoppers Newfoundland and Labrador are sponsoring the Sportsmanship First Program. In addition to the Team Sportsmanship Award, each team will nominate an individual player to receive an individual sportsmanship medal.

The top teams will be rewarded with gold and silver medals, while the winner of the championship game will also receive the coveted championship banner.

All the School Sports Newfoundland and Labrador tournaments are sponsored by School Milk Foundation/Dairy Farmers of Newfoundland and Crime Stoppers Newfoundland and Labrador.
