Artists selected for National Artist Program

Tourism, Culture and Recreation Minister Paul Shelley today announced that four young artists in the province have been selected to participate in the National Artist Program (NAP) as part of the 2005 Canada Games taking place from August 6-20, 2005 in Regina, Saskatchewan.

"The National Artist Program is an important element of the Canada Games and one which enhances appreciation for the pursuit of excellence through sport and cultural activity by the inclusion of the arts," said Minister Shelley. "The four individuals selected will join qualifying athletes to form Team Newfoundland and Labrador. We wish all members good luck as they continue to prepare for the upcoming Canada Games and welcome the newest members to the team."

Kristin Brown, a figure-skater from Wabush, was chosen as the creative athlete; and Sarah Best, a visual artist from St. Johns, Allan Ricketts, a musician and visual artist from Torbay, and Logan Wood, a visual artist from Gander, were chosen as the three emerging artists by the Newfoundland and Labrador Arts Council panel.

All NAP teams comprise three emerging artists and one creative athlete. Creative athletes represent a sport that parallels the artistic merit exemplified by the artist, while emerging artists collectively represent a variety of art disciplines; literary arts, visual arts, dance/movement arts, theatre arts, music arts, traditional cultural/folk practices, interarts and circus arts.

The National Artist Program selection process is committed to artistic excellence, gender equity, the official languages, and the inclusion of Aboriginal people. National Artist Program participants were selected based on their demonstration of artistic excellence and commitment to the creative development of their practice (art or sport). They are locally identified as an emerging artist/creative athlete through peer recognition and community accomplishment.

The National Artist Program will bring together 52 diverse emerging artists and creative athletes with 10 professional Saskatchewan artists to collaborate in a two-week interdisciplinary mentorship creative residency, culminating in a Gala performance.
