Provincial Archives launches two new Web sites

Tourism, Culture and Recreation Minister Paul Shelley today announced that the Provincial Archives of Newfoundland and Labrador (PANL) has launched two new Web sites Women and Sport and Newfoundlands French Shore.

These two sites are a continuing example of the kind of outreach program the archives will endeavour to build upon as they move into The Rooms," said Minister Shelley. "Both Web sites will serve as useful resource tools for those interested in researching both the history of women s sport in the province and French heritage in the province. The sites also build on the Provincial Archives continued commitment to provide improved online searching capability for distance clients."

The Women and Sport Web site is based primarily on the collections of the Sports Archives of Newfoundland and Labrador and interviews conducted by Linda Murphy and Frances Horwood, long-time dedicated volunteers of the Sports Archives. The site illustrates, through photographs and personal account narratives, the participation of women in sports in Newfoundland and Labrador between 1856 and 1949. Several other archival repositories also contributed images, including the Bay Roberts Heritage Society, City of St. Johns Archives, Grand Falls-Windsor Heritage Society, Prince of Wales Collegiate Archives, and Trinity Historical Society Archives.

Newfoundlands French Shore Web site is launched a part of the on-going PANL commitment to celebrate the 2004 French anniversary year, and to bring increased attention and emphasis to the French heritage of the province. The site complements the archival exhibition "Newfoundlands French Shore Depicted: 1713-1904"; the traveling exhibit created from it; the exhibition catalogue; and a CD with educational components, to be completed early this year.

The French celebration initiatives have been made possible through partnerships with the Association of Newfoundland and Labrador Archives (ANLA); the 2004 Society; Library and Archives Canada; and the Office of French Services, Treasury Board Secretariat, Government of Newfoundland and Labrador. Financial support has been provided by Industry Canada and ANLA, whose funding came from the Atlantic Canada Cultural Economic Agreement, a program of the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency and the Department of Canadian Heritage.

"Our government is very proud to have been part of the 2004 celebrations, and the activities and products created by PANL are an excellent example of the ways in which our culture and heritage can be animated and made available to the broadest possible audiences throughout the province" said Minister Shelley.

The Provincial Archives is committed to preserving Newfoundland and Labradors archival records, from both government and non-government sources, including photographs, maps, architectural plans, electronic records, and film footage for its on-site and distance clients from within the province, the rest of Canada, the United States and even Europe. Its collection includes over 400,000 photographs, some 50,000 maps, records and diaries of colonial secretaries, governors and prime ministers, post-Confederation government records, and merchant and business records of the colony and country.

Both the Women in Sport and Newfoundlands French Shore Web sites can be accessed through the main PANL web site at www.gov.nl.ca/panl/ For further information contact Shelley Smith, Director, Provincial Archives at (709) 729-3065.
