Applications available for Arts and Letters Awards

Tourism, Culture and Recreation Minister Paul Shelley today announced that applications are now available for the 53rd annual Provincial Arts and Letters Awards. The aim of the annual Arts and Letters Awards is to stimulate creative talent in the province by awarding prizes in various sections of creative endeavor.

"Since its inception in 1952, the Arts and Letters Awards program has recognized thousands of individuals in the province for their creative abilities," said Minister Shelley. "Each year, hundreds of residents submit entries to the Program. The continued increase in entries each year is testament to the incredible amount of talent in the province."

Applicants are required to submit their creative piece to either the senior or junior (E.J.Pratt) divisions of the awards. The senior division (19 years and older) consists of the following categories: literary arts which includes poetry, short fiction, non-fictional prose and dramatic script; musical composition, comprising all musical genres; and visual arts, including a wide-range of techniques: photography, painting, drawing, sculpture and others. The prizes in the senior division are valued at $750 each.

The E.J. Pratt Division (12 to 18 years) categories are similar to those in the senior division with the exception of literary arts which has just two sections: poetry and prose. The prizes in the junior division are valued at $200 each.

The Percy Janes First Novel Award is awarded to the winning entry of a full length, unpublished novel manuscript with a minimum of 30,000 words. The award has a cash prize of $1,000.

All interested applicants must submit their creative piece, along with a completed application form, to the Arts and Letters Office, located at the Arts and Culture Centre in St. Johns, by 5:00 p.m., on Friday, February 25, 2005 or postmarked by that date. Late entries will not be accepted. Additional information may be obtained at the Arts and Letters Office (709) 729-5253, by email (rbest@gov.nl.ca.) or by visiting the Arts and Letters website www.gov.nl.ca/artsandletters
