(Office of the Information and Privacy Commissioner)

The Office of the Information and Privacy Commissioner is pleased to release the Guidelines for Video Surveillance by Public Bodies in Newfoundland and Labrador. Public bodies include government departments and agencies, health care boards, schools, the College of the North Atlantic, Memorial University, and municipalities.

These guidelines are meant to assist public bodies in deciding whether collection of personal information by means of a video surveillance program is both lawful and justifiable and, if so, what privacy protection measures must be considered.

While the protection of privacy provisions of the Access to Information and Protection of Privacy Act are not yet proclaimed into force, these guidelines should help ensure that privacy is appropriately protected once the legislation does come into effect.

The guidelines are available on our Web site at //www.oipc.gov.nl.ca/ under "Resources."
