Premier declares September 12-16
Sexual Violence Awareness Week
Premier Danny Williams signed a proclamation
today declaring September 12-16 as Sexual Violence Awareness Week. He was joined
by representatives from the Newfoundland and Labrador Sexual Assault Crisis and
Prevention Centre who are coordinating a number of events throughout the week to
help raise awareness about sexual violence.
The Government of Newfoundland and Labrador is committed to taking real steps
toward ending violence in this province, said Premier Williams. Working in
partnership with community groups such as the Newfoundland and Labrador Sexual
Assault Crisis and Prevention Centre through the Violence Prevention Initiative,
we will find long term solutions to the problem of sexual violence in our
province.
Joan Burke, Minister Responsible for the Status of Women, also expressed her
support today for both the work of the Newfoundland and Labrador Sexual Assault
Crisis and Prevention Centre and the governments commitment to raise awareness
of sexual violence against women. I encourage all residents of this province to
become involved in the activities of this week and recognize their own
responsibility in ending violence against women, said Minister Burke. We need
to continue working together to raise awareness and support programs and
services that will better help people in abusive situations.
During Sexual Violence Awareness Week, the Newfoundland and Labrador Sexual
Assault Crisis and Prevention Centre has organized a number of events including
a news conference and public information session and open house, to learn about
the centres essential services, a benefit concert for the centre and a youth
poster-making night. The week culminates with the annual Take Back the Night
March and Rally on the steps of City Hall on Friday, September 16. Concluding
Sexual Violence Awareness Week, a dance will be held to celebrate the courage of
women who fight everyday for equality and justice.
Additionally, in recognition of Sexual Violence Awareness Week, flags will be
flown at half mast at the Confederation Building today.
