Silviculture funding announced for Harbour Main-Whitbourne

Ed Byrne, Minister of Natural Resources, and Tom Hedderson, Minister of Education and MHA for Harbour Main-Whitbourne, have announced funding in the amount of $53,380 for a silviculture project in the district. The funding is being provided through governments $7.3 million 2005 silviculture program.

Minister Byrne said silviculture projects ongoing throughout the province this summer will play a vital role in sustaining a future wood supply for the province.

It is through initiatives such as this site preparation project that government is demonstrating its commitment to responsible forest management, said Minister Byrne. In addition, the provincial silviculture program creates meaningful employment opportunities for many individuals in rural communities throughout Newfoundland and Labrador.

"This funding is not just about investing in the raw material for future wood products," said Minister Hedderson. "This is about investing in people in the community who will benefit directly from our latest effort to grow the economy."

This project is taking place in the vicinity of Tower Road and will consist of site preparation work over an area of 200 hectares. This will allow for future planting and regeneration of hardwood species. Quest Inc. was awarded the contract for this project which started on June 13 and is expected to be completed in early July.
