Commercial harvester
charged with illegally transporting timber
An investigation carried out by
conservation officers with the Department of Natural Resources has
resulted in charges being laid against a commercial timber harvester
from the community of Lethbridge for illegally transporting timber.
The investigation was carried out on the Bonavista Peninsula during
September and October of 2004, at which time it is alleged the
harvester in question was observed transporting commercial timber
without the required load slip documentation.
As a result, the individual is facing 26 violations of load slip
regulations under the Forestry Act for allegedly transporting 26
truck loads of timber without having load slips in place. The
minimum fine for each offence is $500.
Under the Load Slip System, a load slip is required to accompany
each load of commercial timber transported on a highway. The Load
Slip System was introduced in Newfoundland and Labrador in August
2002 as a mechanism to provide for better tracking of commercially-
harvested timber and to deter the illegal harvesting and processing
of Crown timber. The information obtained through the Load Slip
System allows forestry officials to more accurately determine the
actual amount of timber being harvested, thus reducing the impact on
the provinces forests through illegal harvesting.
