Princeton man sentenced for illegal possession of moose

Monty Prince of Princeton was recently convicted at provincial court in Clarenville for illegal possession of big game.

Mr. Prince was charged in July 2003 after a conservation officer with the Department of Natural Resources came upon a section of highway near Princeton that showed signs a moose had been recently struck by a vehicle. Upon further investigation, the conservation officer observed a trail of blood that led to a shed on the individuals property approximately 1.25 kilometres from the highway. A subsequent search of the shed resulted in the discovery and seizure of four quarters of moose, including the head and hide. As a result, Mr. Prince was charged with illegal possession of big game under provincial Wildlife Regulations.

Mr. Prince was fined $1,000 for the offence and is prohibited from holding a big game licence for five years. The moose was ordered forfeited to the Crown.
