$52,777 in funding support announced under Crab Workers Support Program

The Department of Municipal Affairs today provided an update on projects approved under the province�s Crab Workers Support Program, and announced $52,777 in funding approvals.

"While government developed this program to provide necessary hours of employment to displaced crab workers, the tangible benefits of the labours funded under the Crab Workers Support program continue to be realized as the program enters its final stages," stated Municipal Affairs Minister Jack Byrne. "The positive response we continue to receive from community leaders and others concerning the improvements they see gives us an assurance that the program continues to fund quality projects with long-term benefits."

The program has approved $36,945 to provide increased funding support for previously approved projects located in Comfort Cove-Newstead, Englee, Newville, Plum Point. Salmon Cove, Harbour Grace, St. Lawrence and Summerford.

New funding has been approved for the following:

  • $10,030 to Carter�s Cove for depot clean-up and construction;
  • $2,111 to Bay Roberts Central United Church for repairs to cemetery and meeting room;
  • $2,111 to the Town of Wabana for repairs and painting to town arena;
  • $1,580 to the Town of Dildo for work on Fishermen�s Lodge.
  • The Crab Workers Support Program is a one-time initiative for crab workers to help address employment shortfalls due to the late start of the 2005 crab fishery.
