Province commits $160,000 to support municipal, recreational and tourism development in Lewisporte

Jack Byrne, Minister of Municipal Affairs, along with MHA Tom Rideout, today announced a provincial investment of $160,000 to the District of Lewisporte supporting projects which will improve municipal, recreational and tourist infrastructure for the region. The projects have been approved under the province�s $6 million Community Enhancement Program.

"The variety of projects supported in Lewisporte will show long-term benefit to highway safety issues, development and enhancement of recreational and municipal infrastructure and a number of tourism-related projects; all of which will have an immediate positive impact," stated Minister Byrne. "We continue to process applications, and work with communities to ensure that quality, creative and worthwhile projects are supported, while working within our mandate to ensure that the funding is fairly spread out through the province. The demand has been extensive and we will continue to administer this program in a fair and responsible manner, while working within the budget allotted for the program."

Funding totaling $160,000 has been provided to the District of Lewisporte in support of the following initiatives:

  • $117,000 to the Lewisporte Area Development Association in support of a number of projects including: work on the Beothuck Interpretation Centre, renovations to museum, Hunt's Cove Park, brush cutting and landscaping, Campbellton Town Hall, Fawkes Dock general cleanup, renovations to Browne's Arm Fire Hall, repairs to Porterville wharf, renovations to Laurenceton Community Centre, upgrade trail to water supply, develop park in Horwood;
     
  • 9,800 to the Local Service District of Stoneville for interior work on the fire hall and community centre;
     
  • $11,700 to the Town of Comfort Cove-Newstead for construction of bridge on snowmobile trail;
     
  • $12,000 to the Town of Birchy Bay in support of various projects;
     
  • $10,000 to Norris Arm Boys and Girls Club for club renovations.
  • "I am extremely pleased that funding to the sum of $160,000 has been made available for these projects throughout Lewisporte District," said Minister Tom Rideout. "This funding will go a long way toward improving municipal infrastructure throughout the district, as well as the tourism industry in this region. This represents a significant allocation of funding for Lewisporte District, and I join with my constituents in welcoming this tremendous news."

    The $6 million Community Enhancement Program is a targeted employment creation program focused on creating short-term employment initiatives for eligible recipients. Employment supports provided through this program are aimed at projects which provide an enduring benefit to the communities, and have an economic development or community infrastructure focus.
