$92,100 approved for Crab Worker
Support Program
The Department of Municipal and Provincial
Affairs today announced increased funding and new projects for the support
program for crab industry workers in the province.
"The number of applications which the department is receiving has slowed
considerably, with the majority of applications now requesting additional
funding to complete their projects," stated Minister Jack Byrne. "We remain
committed to working with those requesting funding for projects, as well as crab
industry workers to ensure that projects are approved and that sufficient
opportunity is made available for employment."
A total of $78,000 has been approved to provide increased funding support for
previously approved projects to the following areas: the Bay Roberts Royal
Canadian Legion Branch #32, Bonavista, Brighton, Brigus, Carbonear, Clarke's
Beach, Deadman's Bay, Englee, Freshwater, Gaskiers-Point La Haye, Lamaline, La
Scie, Lawn, Musgrave Harbour, Old Perlican, Port Rexton, Spaniard's Bay Harbour
Authority, St. Anthony Harbour Authority of Goose Cove, St. Lawrence, Summerford,
Too Good Arm, Trepassey Management Corporation, Triton, Upper Island Cove Come
Home Year Committee, and the Witless Bay Kinsmen Club.
New projects total $14,100 and include the following:

Inc. in support of repairs and upgrades to Cape St. John Arena;
- $1,600 to Marysvale Community Centre Inc.
for work on the community centre;
- $2,100 to Springdale in support of

"The Crab Workers Support Program has
successfully supported approximately 150 projects which have addressed highway
safety issues, developed or enhanced recreational and municipal infrastructure
or facilitated the development of tourism projects; all of which will have an
immediate positive impact on communities throughout the province," added
Minister Byrne.
