Use Candles with Care
Theme for 2005 Fire Prevention Week
The Department of Municipal and
Provincial Affairs today announced that Fire Prevention Week 2005 is
being observed October 9-15.
As the minister responsible for fire protection services in the
province, Minister Jack Byrne feels this is an opportunity not only
to educate about fire protection programs, and encourage a
pro-active approach to fire prevention, but also to recognize the
provinces 6,400 paid and volunteer firefighters. Taking the time to
organize a plan for action in the event of a fire, including
elimination of fire hazards, and ensuring that fire and safety tools
such as smoke detectors are working properly are significant steps
for homes, schools and businesses to ensure that everyone is
prepared in the event of a fire, stated Minister Byrne. It is also
appropriate to recognize those in the province who are responsible
for protecting the lives and property of residents in the province.
Firefighters place their own safety on the line when providing fire
protection services, and should be commended for their dedication
and commitment to protecting our province.
During the week, fire departments across the country will promote
public awareness of fire prevention and protection. This years
theme, Use Candles with Care, underscores the simple lesson to be
aware of the dangers of fire and promotes fire protection awareness.

site at //www.fiprecan.ca/.
Every second can mean the difference between life and death, and
advance planning is absolutely essential, added Minister Byrne. We
must all make a concerted effort to educate ourselves and be aware
of fire hazards and practical fire protection behavior to ensure
that we do all we can to protect ourselves and our families and
friends.
