Update on flooding
conditions on west coast - 2:30 p.m.
Following is a status report
concerning flooding on the west coast of the province as of 2:30
p.m. Wednesday, September 28. Further updates will continue
throughout the day as information becomes available.
- Reidville - The road in
Reidville will be opened to foot traffic this afternoon. Ninety
people evacuated from Reidville have been permitted to return to
their homes. The reception centre set up in Deer Lake to
accommodate Reidville residents has now been deactivated.
Temporary repairs to the waterline are underway. Provincial
Environment officials have advised the town that water from the
fire hydrants is under a boil order.
- Kippens - The town advised the
Emergency Measures Organization that Millbrook Lane is
completely washed out. Transportation and Works are on site
assessing damage and the road remains closed. There are reports
of flooding in homes and property damage.
- Stephenville - Work continues on
the re-establishment of the water supply. Indications are
several houses have been moved off their foundation and incurred
significant damage. Approximately 80 homes are still evacuated.
The reception centre is still established in the Armory with 257
people registered to date. Eighteen stayed overnight.
Indications are the majority of displaced residents stayed with
family and friends. NLEMO and Human Resources, Labour and
Employment have contacted Newfoundland and Labrador Housing
Corporation and arranged home inspectors to undertake initial
assessments of damaged homes. NLHC will coordinate these
assessments with the town. NLEMO has also requested proposals
from the insurance adjusting industry to undertake damage
assessments. MAPA engineers have met with the town and PSEPC
officials regarding municipal damage compensation claims.
- Rocky Harbour has reported some
flooding in homes and property damage.
- NLEMO officials will be on the
west coast tomorrow to meet with the various affected towns and
distribute Damage Assistance applications.
