Minister acknowledges municipal election candidates

Municipal and Provincial Affairs Minister Jack Byrne today expressed his congratulations to the over 2,000 candidates who put their names forth for the 2005 municipal elections held yesterday in the province.

"Municipal government contributes to the growth and development of strong, viable communities. Councils have a significant and valuable role to play to ensure that the best interests of residents whom they represent are addressed, stated Minister Byrne. I congratulate all candidates for showing real commitment to their communities by offering their time, energy and vision to make the province a better place to live. As an elected official or community resident, we can all contribute to enhancing our communities by becoming involved.

On September 27, elections were scheduled to be held in 140 municipalities in the province. A total of 42 municipalities which have a full complement of council have been proclaimed by acclamation. Due to extreme flooding in Stephenville, elections were postponed yesterday and will be rescheduled at a date to be determined. The municipal elections for Deer Lake, Reidville, Cormack, and Lords were adjourned late in the day and the remaining poll hours will be rescheduled in the next seven days.

The department will now focus on addressing the vacancies which exist, and working with municipalities where elections were unable to be held due to an insufficient number of candidates, added Minister Byrne A total of 63 municipalities had an adequate number of candidates nominated to constitute a quorum, however require a by-election to fill a number of vacant positions. As well, an additional 31 municipalities had an insufficient number of nominees to constitute a quorum and will hold special by-elections on October 25.
