$1.6 million committed to support
construction of CBS Pool Complex
Jack Byrne, Minister of Municipal and Provincial
Affairs, along with Terry French, MHA for Conception Bay South District and
Elizabeth Marshall MHA for Topsail District, today announced that government has
committed to provide $1.6 million to the Conception Bay South Town Council to
help finance improvements to the CBS Pool Complex. The funding comes under the
2005/2008 Multi-Year Capital Works Program.
We hope this financial support will allow the CBS council to proceed with
construction on the pool complex, and that residents of CBS and surrounding
areas will have access in a timely manner to a much-needed facility, stated
Minister Byrne. We are prepared to work with council and consider a
re-allocation of funding if additional costs are required, and if further
details and costs on the pool retrofit are substantiated to the department.
The Department of Municipal and Provincial Affairs has approved $35 million at
50/50 in Capital Works Funding over the past seven years for the town of
Conception Bay South, and recently an additional $7.2 million in 2005/2008 in
Multi-Year Capital Works Funding in pursuit of an acceptable level of municipal
services for the town's residents.
Mr. French and Ms. Marshall welcome the funding and the commitment demonstrated
by government to improve the pool facility for residents of CBS.
Mr. French said, The investment of $8.8 million provided to the Town of
Conception Bay South through the 2005/2008 Multi-Year Capital Works Program is a
significant contribution and will greatly improve services for residents in the
area. The benefits of an improved pool facility will enhance recreational
opportunities for families and children, and will provide much needed access to
a quality recreational facility.
Ms. Marshall said, I am very pleased that Minister Jack Byrne has recognized
the importance of the pool complex to the residents of CBS and Paradise and has
provided the necessary funding for this project to proceed. I am certainly
looking forward to the reopening of an improved facility.
This government remains committed to working with municipalities to ensure
strengthening of infrastructure and municipal services, and supports a renewed
vision for rural communities across Newfoundland and Labrador, added Minister
Byrne.
