Government to provide financial assistance to improve public water system in Cottrells Cove

In response to water system concerns in the community of Cottrells Cove in the District of Exploits, Jack Byrne, Minister of Municipal and Provincial Affairs, today announced provincial funding in support of a new chlorination facility and new section of transmission main. The funding totals approximately $126,000 and is part of the 2005-06 Municipal Capital Works Program.

Residents of our province deserve access to a clean water supply, and this government is committed to ensure safe quality water systems are in place and operating efficiently throughout the province, said Minister Byrne. We have been working with the town to identify issues with the water system and established a plan to deal with the problems and ensure that the water issues are addressed. Problems were identified with the existing water lines and water quality, and the new chlorination and main water line will provide residents of Cottrells Cove clean, healthy safe drinking water.

Cottrells Cove problems with the water system have included low pressure and volumes, problems with leaks, inadequate disinfection and poor water quality. Fifty-two homes and one school are serviced by the water system.

MHA for the District of Exploits Clayton Forsey is pleased that government has taken action to improve water quality for the area. Water quality is a serious issue which government has responded to by providing a long-term solution which is in the best health and safety interest of residents in the region. The funding announced today is a strong indicator that government has listened to the concerns of the town, and has made it a priority to put funding in place to improve the water issue quickly.

Gloria Butler, Chairperson, Cottrells Cove Local Service District added, The aging water system in our community has been long overdue for upgrading in order to improve water quality. The commitment by this government to address this issue and provide substantial financial support will support new infrastuture to upgrade and repair our water system. Residents will not have to worry about low pressure and unclean water, but will be able to enjoy clean and clear water.
