Tidy Towns program
receives financial boost of $30,000
Jack Byrne, Minister of
Municipal and Provincial Affairs, is pleased to support environmental
responsibility and clean-up of communities throughout the province with
the announcement of a $30,000 contribution to the Tidy Towns 2005
program.
The Tidy Towns program is incredibly beneficial not only for
beautifying our communities, but also for the sense of community pride
that it instills, stated Minister Byrne. By participating in this
program, municipalities have the opportunity to impress on visitors and
tourists what we already know, that we live in a unique, beautiful, and
clean province. I encourage all municipalities to participate in this
important initiative by working on public and private properties and
strive for a Tidy Towns award.
This is a great boost to an important program, says Deputy Mayor
Herbert Brett, president of the Newfoundland and Labrador Federation of
Municipalities (NLFM). With every years competition, municipalities
draw on the community pride of residents to get the bragging rights of a
Tidy Towns Award. We really appreciate the efforts of Minister Jack
Byrne on our behalf for this program.
The Tidy Towns judges look for excellence in eight criteria areas,
including tidiness and environmental effort, community involvement,
heritage preservation, urban forestry, landscaped areas, floral
arrangements, and turf and groundcover. The competition places
participants into one of six categories based on population and category
winners are appointed based on the highest evaluation scores in their
category. Criteria awards are also given to the towns with the highest
individual scores in the Tidy Towns eight criteria.
Tidy Towns Newfoundland and Labrador is a non-profit organization that
is committed to fostering civic pride, environmental responsibility and
beautification through community participation and the challenge of a
provincial competition. Since its inception in 1997, Tidy Towns
Newfoundland and Labrador has grown in participation from registration
of a handful of towns to 66 or more communities in all corners of the
province.
The Tidy Towns program is possible through financial contributions and
support from sponsors including the Government of Newfoundland and
Labrador (Department of Municipal and Provincial Affairs) and Provincial
Airlines. It is run by a partnership of the NLFM, the Newfoundland and
Labrador Parks/Recreation Association, the Newfoundland and Labrador
Womens Institute, the Newfoundland and Labrador Association of
Landscape Architects, the Atlantic Planners Institute Newfoundland
Branch, Communities in Bloom, and the Heritage Foundation of
Newfoundland and Labrador.
