$6.8 million offered to Mount Pearl under Multi-Year Capital Works Program

Jack Byrne, Minister of Municipal and Provincial Affairs, Dave Denine, MHA for the District of Mount Pearl, and Harvey Hodder, MHA for the District of Waterford Valley, announced today that $6.8 million has been offered to the City of Mount Pearl under the Multi-Year Capital Works Program.

"Government is very pleased to offer this funding to the City of Mount Pearl for their infrastructure needs," said Minister Byrne. "This is the first time we have entered into this arrangement with Mount Pearl, resulting in more funding for the city for their infrastructure needs. The Multi-Year Capital Works Program is designed for larger municipalities to carry out larger projects effectively and efficiently. Commitments to municipal infrastructure ensure that our municipalities remain viable and strong."

"We have identified most of this funding for roads upgrading," said Steve Kent, Mayor of Mount Pearl. "There are a number of areas which we must look at on a priority-basis and I look forward to working with my fellow councilors to identify areas for improvement. Mount Pearl has always prided itself on being a strong, family-oriented community. Over the next three years, improvements will be made to our citys infrastructure which will make Mount Pearl an even better place to live."

"This new agreement is good news for the residents of Mount Pearl," said MHA Harvey Hodder. "Improving upon existing municipal infrastructure is vital to the well-being of our municipalities. The City of Mount Pearl has made great strides to become a major centre of our province and this funding earmarked under the Multi-Year Capital Works Program will improve services offered to residents."

"The Multi-Year Capital Works Program is an excellent resource for our provinces larger municipalities," said MHA Dave Denine. "This particular program will enable Mount Pearl to plan for long-term projects because of the three-year time frame for the program. I know that the funding identified under this agreement will be incredibly beneficial for the residents of my district."

The provincial government has committed $85 million under the 2005-08 Multi-Year Capital Works Program. This program is cost-shared on a 50/50 basis between the provincial government and larger municipalities.

In total, combined with the Municipal Capital Works Program and the Canada-Newfoundland Infrastructure Program, governments have committed $140 million for municipal infrastructure. It is estimated that these programs will create approximately 90,000 person weeks of employment throughout the province.
