$4.0 million offered to Torbay
under Multi-Year Capital Works Agreement
Jack Byrne, Minister of Municipal and Provincial
Affairs and MHA for the District of Cape St. Francis, announced today that $4.0
million has been offered to the Town of Torbay under the Multi-Year Capital
Works Agreement.
"The provincial government believes that municipal infrastructure is incredibly
important to our municipalities," said Minister Byrne. "Through programs such as
the Multi-Year Capital Works Agreement, we are able to provide much-needed
funding to larger municipalities for their capital works needs. This
announcement today is great news to the residents of Torbay."
"The Town of Torbay will be using the majority of this funding for water and
sewer projects, as well as for other improvements," said Robert Codner, Mayor of
Torbay. "We strongly feel that having reliable water and sewer systems is very
important for residents of Torbay. I am pleased that we have been able to
negotiate another beneficial agreement."
The provincial government has committed $85 million under the 2005-08 Multi-Year
Capital Works Program. This program is cost-shared on a 50/50 basis between the
provincial government and larger municipalities.
In total, combined with the Municipal Capital Works Program and the
Canada-Newfoundland Infrastructure Program, governments have committed $140
million for municipal infrastructure. It is estimated that these programs will
create approximately 90,000 person weeks of employment throughout the province.
