$20 million offered to City of St. Johns under Multi-Year Capital Works Agreement

Jack Byrne, Minister of Municipal and Provincial Affairs, announced today that the provincial government and the City of St. Johns would be entering into a Multi-Year Capital Works Agreement valued at $20 million.

"I am very pleased that we have reached this agreement with the City of St. Johns for municipal infrastructure funding," said Minister Byrne. "This three year program greatly benefits larger municipalities by providing them with the funding necessary to complete large projects. It also benefits smaller municipalities because they do not have to compete with our cities and larger towns for infrastructure dollars."

"The City of St. Johns has earmarked this funding for roads and water and sewer improvements," said Andy Wells, Mayor of St. Johns. "We also use some funding to make repairs to bridges and renovations to the city depot. Residents of St. Johns can expect to see this work completed in various parts of the city. I am looking forward to the completion of this work as it will provide improved services to our residents."

The provincial government has committed $85 million under the 2005-08 Multi-Year Capital Works Program. This program is cost-shared on a 50/50 basis between the provincial government and larger municipalities.

In total, combined with the Municipal Capital Works Program and the Canada-Newfoundland Infrastructure Program, governments have committed $140 million for municipal infrastructure. It is estimated that these programs will create approximately 90,000 person weeks of employment throughout the province.
