$2.0 million offered to Happy Valley-Goose Bay under Multi-Year Capital Works Agreement

Jack Byrne, Minister of Municipal and Provincial Affairs, and John Hickey, MHA for the District of Lake Melville, announced today that $2.0 million has been offered to the Town of Happy Valley-Goose Bay under the Multi-Year Capital Works Agreement.

"I am very pleased that we are once again prepared to enter into a Multi-Year Capital Works Agreement with the Town of Happy Valley-Goose Bay," said Minister Byrne. "This funding will help the town improve upon its existing infrastructure needs. Government recognizes that municipal infrastructure is extremely important to our municipalities as it is a key component to growing the economy."

MHA John Hickey said: "I am pleased that the Department of Municipal and Provincial Affairs has once again committed to help improve infrastructure needs to residents of Labrador and, specifically, to the Town of Happy Valley-Goose Bay. As a former mayor, I know how important this program is to this region and I look forward to being of any assistance as projects are identified for this agreement."

"We will be investing this funding towards roads, water and sewer and some equipment," said Leo Abbass, Mayor of Happy Valley-Goose Bay. "We are looking forward to identifying areas which need the greatest priority. We will be continuing discussions with the Department of Municipal and Provincial Affairs over the next few weeks to finalize our priority list."

The provincial government has committed $85 million under the 2005-08 Multi-Year Capital Works Program. This program is cost-shared on a 50/50 basis between provincial and larger municipal governments.

In total, combined with the Municipal Capital Works Program and the Canada-Newfoundland Infrastructure Program, governments have committed $140 million for municipal infrastructure. It is estimated that these programs will create approximately 90,000 person weeks of employment throughout the province.
