Minister pleased with recent meeting with the Labrador Metis Nation

Tom Rideout, Minister responsible for Aboriginal Affairs, today gave an overview of his recent meeting and discussions with the Labrador Metis Nation (LMN).

Minister Rideout said, I had a very productive meeting with representatives of the LMN last week in Labrador. We discussed a number of issues of mutual interest and concern, including wildlife harvesting, enforcement and management.

The LMN has been lobbying government to enter into an agreement on wildlife harvesting for LMN members. The minister noted that while he is not able to grant their request, he is committed to working with the LMN on wildlife issues in Labrador.

Minister Rideout added that, We are committed to maintaining a positive relationship and open communication with the LMN. Indeed, the need for improved dialogue and cooperation between government and the LMN on issues of common importance, and in areas of ongoing uncertainty and disagreement, was a key focus of our meeting.

I did commit to explore potential approaches and options for improved communication and cooperation between government and the LMN on hunting activity, enforcement and other wildlife management issues, but government has no legal basis to implement special hunting rights for LMN members.
