Access to Information and Protection of Privacy Act takes effect

The Access to Information and Protection of Privacy Act (ATIPPA), comes into effect today, Monday, January 17. Access provisions take effect immediately, with the proclamation of privacy provisions to take effect at a later date to be determined.

"The Access to Information and Protection of Privacy Act replaces the Freedom of Information Act and will improve the right to access information, and ensure public bodies become more open and accountable," stated Tom Marshall, Minister of Justice and Attorney General. "This new legislation will clarify individuals right to obtain information, and support governments intention to be open, transparent and accountable."

Approximately 460 public bodies are subject to ATIPPA, including government departments and agencies, school boards, public post-secondary institutions, health boards and municipalities.

Information relating to ATIPPA including forms can be located on the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador Web site: www.gov.nl.ca/just/civil/atipp
