AMEC selected to develop provincial innovation strategy

Danny Williams, Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador, and Kathy Dunderdale, Minister of Innovation, Trade and Rural Development, announced today that AMEC Earth and Environmental has been chosen as the successful consultant to help develop the provincial innovation strategy for economic development.

The consultant will identify immediate opportunities and develop medium and long-term strategies to help stimulate greater utilization of innovation in all sectors of the economy. It will also identify how the province can leverage increased external investment and federal funding for innovation.

"The provinces future economic development depends on our ability to be innovative. In our blueprint we recognized that growth industries depend on innovation and the rapid transformation of these innovations to help develop new products and services," Premier Williams said. "Newfoundlanders and Labradorians have always been innovative; AMEC will help us build on our culture of innovation and formalize it in a strategy that recognizes the needs of all regions of the province."

"The innovation strategy will assist businesses and organizations to identify creative ways to seize new business opportunities," said Minister Dunderdale. "We have a remarkable opportunity to stimulate regional and provincial industries by commercializing research and development projects. The strategy will specifically emphasize how regional and provincial applications of science, technology and ingenuity can improve the competitiveness of industries throughout Newfoundland and Labrador."

As the successful candidate, AMEC will seek input from stakeholders including businesses, industry associations, labour, municipal representatives, academic institutions, economic development groups, and federal departments and agencies.
