Reminder: Another 25 cent increase in the minimum wage as of January 1, 2006

Paul Shelley, Minister of Human Resources, Labour and Employment (HRLE) would like to remind businesses and workers in the province that the minimum wage will increase from $6.25 to $6.50 an hour effective Sunday, January 1, 2006.

"Our continued commitment to a fair increase in the minimum wage is further evidence that we are taking action to strengthen the Newfoundland and Labrador economy," said Minister Shelley. "We are taking care to look after societys most vulnerable. Work on our poverty reduction strategy is well underway. We have invested in affordable housing and in a home heat rebate for low income earners. We recently doubled the heat supplement provided to income support clients as part of their benefits, an amount that had been unchanged since the 1980s. All this is being done while encouraging economic growth and improving our fiscal situation."

This is the second of four scheduled increases. The next 25 cent raise is scheduled for June 1, 2006, followed by another 25 cents on January 1, 2007. The decision to increase the minimum wage followed an extensive review that was completed in 2004 and a consultations process that received over 150 submissions.
