Labour force survey results point to a strengthening economy

Paul Shelley, Minister of Human Resources, Labour and Employment (HRLE), is pleased with the results of Statistics Canadas latest Labour Force Survey that show an employment increase in Newfoundland and Labrador of 3.1 per cent from November 2004 to November 2005.

"As a government, we have been taking strong action to get the provincial governments fiscal house in order while creating a positive economic climate," said Minister Shelley. "Whether investing in improved infrastructure, encouraging the growth of our cultural industries, supporting tourism, or strengthening rural economies, we have been working to position Newfoundland and Labrador as an economic success for years to come. It is certainly welcome news whenever we see data that point to our strengthening economy."

According to the latest Labour Force Survey results, released on December 2, labour market conditions improved in the province in November. Employment in November 2005 was 214,200, an increase of 3.1 per cent compared to November 2004, while the labour force increased to 251,000, an increase of 1.8 per cent compared to November 2004.

"This government continues to make employment and economic growth a priority," added the minister. "While we recognize that monthly indicators do fluctuate, we are encouraged by such positive signals of employment growth in Newfoundland and Labrador."

The Government of Newfoundland and Labrador is committed to encouraging economic growth that is based on solid economic fundamentals.
