Minister approves
funding for Englee Youth Centre
Joan Burke, Minister of Human
Resources, Labour and Employment, today announced $14,400 in funding
for the Englee Youth Centre on the province’s Northern Peninsula.
“This funding will allow the youth centre to expand the services it
provides to the young people of Englee by focusing on a tutoring
program, as well as guidance in planning for their post-secondary
education,” said Minister Burke.
The Englee Youth Centre has offered a variety of services for the
past three years, such as healthy eating/active living activities,
awareness campaigns around drugs, alcohol and sexually-transmitted
diseases, healthy kids club and a fitness program. “I would like to
commend all those involved in the operation of the centre and the
excellent service provided to our youth,” said Trevor Taylor, MHA
for The Straits and White Bay North, who presented a cheque to the
Englee Youth Centre, Wednesday evening on behalf of Minister Burke.
“Organizations such as this are the heart of our communities and I
applaud their hard-work and dedication in ensuring the needs of our
young people are met.”
The centre’s board of directors identified a need for enhanced
services in the area of educational supports. Board chair Hollis
Cull said, “Offering extra help with homework and making information
available about post-secondary options within a youth-friendly
environment will be a tremendous benefit to the area youth.”
The Department of Human Resources, Labour and Employment is placing
a renewed focus on the young people of Newfoundland and Labrador. “I
am very pleased the department is able to provide funding that will
go directly to programming for the young people of Englee,” said
Minister Burke. “We know the positive results of helping young
people early and taking a preventive approach. Something as simple
as a little extra help with homework can make a difference to a
young person’s future success.”
