Newfoundland and Labrador Housing
Corporation (NLHC) will spend approximately $82,000 in repair and
modernization and improvement projects in the Burin peninsula area
throughout 2005/06. Joan Burke, Minister of Human Resources, Labour
and Employment and Minister Responsible for Newfoundland and
Labrador Housing Corporation (NLHC), and Clyde Jackman, MHA for
Burin Placentia West, made the announcement today.
With approximately 5,700 units province-wide, NLHC recognizes the
importance of allocating budget dollars in the most
fiscally-responsible manner possible, said Minister Burke. The
corporations planned approach to its refurbishment requirements
helps to ensure that social housing dwellings with the greatest
repair needs are addressed first, providing tenants with safe and
comfortable homes and, extends the useful life of the properties.
Refurbishments and repairs are being completed on approximately 100
units throughout the Burin peninsula regional office area and
include the following:
- Oil tank replacement - Smallwood
Crescent, Marystown;
- Replacement of windows and steps
and minor interior upgrading - Price Avenue, Lawn;
- Exterior upgrading of
foundations and walls and window replacement - Fairview Avenue,
St. Lawrence;
- Replacement of exterior siding,
windows, flooring and walls - Malcolm Boulevard, Grand Bank;
- Window replacement, upgrading of
siding, walls and flooring - Smallwood Drive, Grand Bank.
Im very pleased to see this work
going ahead, commented Mr. Jackman. In addition to the
improvements for clients, the investment benefits the Burin
Peninsula economy by generating revenue to local suppliers, so
everyone wins.
Much of the upgrading began in June and will be completed throughout
the 2005/06 fiscal year. The repairs are being completed by NLHCs
own work forces from the Marystown office. This work is part of
NLHCs long-term preventative maintenance plan whereby each year the
condition of all non-profit housing property is assessed, and
maintenance and modernization needs are determined.
