Froude Avenue Community Centre -
Celebrating 20 Years of Community
Today Froude Avenue Community Centre joined with,
staff, volunteers, community residents and invited guests to celebrate 20 years
of community achievement and development. Dave Denine, Parliamentary Secretary
to Joan Burke, Minister of Human Resources, Labour and Employment and Minister
Responsible for Housing, attended a community breakfast at the centre and
brought greetings on behalf of Minister Burke.
Froude Avenue Community Centre first opened its doors in May 1985, and serves a
population of approximately 450 families and children in a 205-unit social
housing development, owned, operated and maintained by NLHC. Located at Froude
Avenue in St. Johns, the centre serves all areas residents including Vimy
Avenue, Vickers, Cashin and Campbell Avenue, as well as Pond View, Mundy Pond
Road and St. Theresas Court.
"I am truly impressed by the calibre of programs offered by the Froude Avenue
Community Centre," said Minister Burke. "It is evident that over the years,
theyve established a high standard of community development. On behalf of the
provincial government and NLHC, we proudly join them in celebrating their 20
years of achievements and contribution to the community."
With the help of a team of committed staff and volunteers, the centre has been
able to meet their mandate of addressing community needs through the provision
of recreational, health, educational, social and vocational programs. Some of
these programs include a 36-week Skills Link Program for youth sponsored by
Human Resources Development Canada. This program enables young people to learn
skills to increase their success in gaining employment. The centre also provides
a breakfast program, sponsored by the Kids Eat Smart Foundation, an after-school
homework program, computer facilities, resource material to children at the end
of each school day; a Tenant Neighbourhood Enhancement Association, and a
guardian and tot playgroup.
Theresa Dunn, Vice Chair, Froude Avenue Community Centre Board of Directors
commented: "Its been an amazing 20 years, and Im so proud to have been part of
the centre, the community and the tenant association. Bob Dawson and the
community centre are, without doubt, the best thing that ever happened to Froude
Avenue."
Froude Avenue Community Centres 20 Years of Community anniversary breakfast
celebrations were held this morning at the centre. Shawn Skinner, MHA, St.
Johns Centre, Len Simms, Chair and Chief Executive Officer, Newfoundland and
Labrador Housing Corporation (NLHC), and members of the Froude Avenue Board of
Directors were also on hand to join in the celebrations.
