Government House Leader pleased with productive fall session

Government House Leader Ed Byrne said today that he is pleased with the fall sitting of the House of Assembly. "This was a productive sitting of the House of Assembly in which 32 pieces of legislation were passed into law," said Minister Byrne. "I want to thank all members for their participation in debate and input on the various bills."

The Family Violence Prevention Act stands out as one of the key achievements of this sitting. "This is a significant initiative that will help to protect persons that face the threat of, or are victims of, family violence," said the minister. The act creates a new mechanism through which victims of family violence can apply to a provincial court judge for an emergency protection order. "This legislation," continued Minister Byrne, "is indeed a step forward in the protection of victims of family violence and our government is proud to have moved ahead with this important initiative for the benefit of those who suffer such abhorrent situations."

Other legislative initiatives approved this fall include numerous health acts respecting the regulation of various professions, and amendments to the Fish Inspection Act to tighten enforcement regulations. These are just a few examples of the important legislation passed in the fall sitting.

"Overall, government made significant progress during this session with the passing of some progressive pieces of legislation," said House Leader Byrne. "The legislation passed this fall will serve to benefit all Newfoundlanders and Labradorians, and we look forward to it receiving Royal Assent in the coming days."
