Dr. Peter Markesteyn appointed to complete final stages of Turner Child Death Review

Harvey Hodder, Speaker of the House of Assembly and Chairperson of the Internal Economy Commission, advises that Dr. Peter Markesteyn has been appointed to complete the final stages of the Turner Child Death Review.

This appointment occurs after consultation with Child and Youth Advocate Lloyd Wicks, who, due to a prolonged illness, cannot continue to accept responsibility for the completion of the review. However, Mr. Wicks has agreed to act in an advisory capacity to Dr. Markesteyn.

Dr. Markesteyn, BSc. M.D. has extensive experience in the conduct of child and adult death reviews and has been a consultant to the federal Department of Justice on several matters, including the cases of David Milgaard and Donald Marshall. His professional experience includes many years of teaching in the Faculty of Medicine at several Canadian universities including the University of Alberta, the University of Manitoba, and Memorial University of Newfoundland. He has also been retained as a consultant by the R.C.M.P. Training Division in Regina, the Atlantic Police Academy in Charlottetown and by the Canadian Police College in Ottawa. He also served some years as the Chief Medical Examiner (Designate) for Newfoundland and Labrador

Speaker Hodder is pleased that a person of Dr. Markesteyns academic background and professional experience has agreed to complete the Turner Child Death Review. He will begin his work immediately.

Speaker Hodder also thanks Mr. Wicks for the research that has been completed to date and for his cooperation in the appointment of Dr. Markesteyn.

For further information, the media should contact Harvey Hodder at (709)729-3404.
