Charges laid in relation to accident in Labrador City

The Department of Government Services announced today that the Iron Ore Company of Canada has been charged for alleged violations under the Occupational Health and Safety Act and Regulations in relation to an accident at the Humphrey Main Pit, located at the mine in Labrador City, in May 2003.

One worker suffered several fractured ribs and multiple fractures of the collar bone after falling just over six feet while performing maintenance work on a piece of heavy equipment.

Four charges were laid May 4, 2005 as a result of an investigation by the Occupational Health and Safety Branch of the Department of Government Services. The violations relate to the alleged failure of the company to provide a safe working platform, and to ensure that safe work procedures were followed.

The first appearance is scheduled for June 22, 2005 at the Provincial Court of Newfoundland and Labrador in Wabush.
