Charges laid resulting from non-compliance with Occupational Health and Safety Act

The Department of Government Services announced today that two companies and two individuals have been charged with alleged violations under the Occupational Health and Safety Act and Regulations in relation to the demolition of a building in Foxtrap in February and March of 2004.

Beothuck Environmental Ltd. and Provincial Environmental Services Ltd., as well as the companies owners, have been charged with six violations under the Occupational Health and Safety Act and Regulations and the Asbestos Abatement Regulations.

The charges stem from the demolition of a former school in Foxtrap and generally relate to the alleged failure to comply with Stop Work Orders to provide a safe workplace for employees and to assess the likelihood of asbestos exposure.

The charges are the result of an investigation by the Occupational Health and Safety Branch.

The first appearance is scheduled for April 19 at Provincial Court in St. Johns.
