Funding approved for research on hagfish abundance in NAFO 3O area

Tom Rideout, Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture and Deputy Premier, today announced that $10,000 has been approved for Vanlyn Enterprises Limited to carry out a resource assessment and survey work on hagfish abundance in the NAFO division 3O area.

Minister Rideout said: "I am extremely pleased that the department can contribute to the efforts of Vanlyn Enterprises. This research work will have significant benefits for Newfoundland and Labrador if a hagfish fishery can be developed in this area. To that end, we certainly support this research."

The development of the NAFO area 3O hagfish resource requires the collection of reliable scientific information in order to effectively manage the resource. Vanlyn Enterprises will be undertaking research to record catches and by-catches, and will further analyze and report their findings to reveal the potential of a commercial hagfish fishery in the area.

"Our government is committed to strengthening the fishing industry in this province," said Minister Rideout. "It is the economic engine of Newfoundland and Labrador, and resource exploration will assist in achieving new opportunities within the fishing sector. When fiscally possible, this government will contribute to initiatives that provide such possibilities."

The minister says that any potential for the development of commercial or recreational fisheries off the coast of Newfoundland and Labrador is worth pursuing.

"Our fishing industry is currently experiencing dramatic changes," said Minister Rideout. "To that end, the exploration of new developments and opportunities could certainly prove to be rewarding."

The hagfish, locally known as the slime eel, is valued in Asian markets, particularly in Korea, as a food item as well as an excellent source of fish skin leather.

Minister Rideout said: "Promoting a healthy fishing industry, as well as the viability of rural communities in Newfoundland and Labrador, remains at the top of governments priority list. Our contribution to the worthwhile efforts of Vanlyn Enterprises certainly demonstrates these commitments."
