Funding announced for Fisheries Stewardship Program in Placentia Bay

Tom Rideout, Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture, today announced funding valued at $10,000 to assist with the Fisheries Stewardship Program in Placentia Bay, a pilot project of the Fish, Food and Allied Workers (FFAW) with the Department of Fisheries and Oceans and the Professional Fish Harvesters Certification Board.

Minister Rideout said, "This is an extremely important initiative of the FFAW and I am very pleased that our department will be participating in the project. This project can be of great value to this province and to our fishing industry and the government supports the FFAW in this venture."

The focus of the Fisheries Stewardship Program is to increase awareness of harvesters and communities with respect to sustainability and stewardship, to promote and practice these concepts in todays fishery and in the rebuilding of fisheries and communities.

"Stewardship is a key component to a sustainable and successful fishery," said Minister Rideout. "The fishery is an integral part of the provincial economy and contributes to both the short and long-term well being of rural Newfoundland and Labrador. To that end, our government is committed to ensuring that the fishery remains a vibrant industry in this province."

Minister Rideout says the fishing industry in Newfoundland and Labrador is the provinces largest private-sector employer and therefore must be maintained.

"A healthy fishing industry must play a leading role in Newfoundland and Labradors economic well being," said the minister. "Entire regional economies are based on the sustainable harvesting and processing of fisheries resources and increasing the awareness of harvesters and communities with respect to stewardship and further promoting these ideas is very important."

The minister reiterated that government is committed to the fishing industry in Newfoundland and Labrador.

"The fishing industry in this province, as well as the viability of rural Newfoundland and Labrador, are top priorities for government," said Minister Rideout. "The fishery is currently undergoing dramatic changes, and we are committed to addressing these changes for the people of this province who depend on the resource. Our contribution to this worthwhile effort of the FFAW demonstrates this commitment."
