New Channing Chair named

Premier Danny Williams announced today that John Cummings, QC, has accepted the position of the James G. Channing Chair in Public Administration, Memorial University, effective April 1, 2006.

"We wish Mr. Cummings well as he takes this next step in his distinguished career in the public service," Premier Williams said. "We thank Mr. Cummings for taking on the position of Channing Chair and look forward to his continued significant contribution to public policy development on issues of relevance to the provincial government."

The Channing Chair was established in 1982 to provide an opportunity for senior public employees to bring their expertise and experience in public administration to Memorial. During his appointment as Fellow of the Channing Chair, Mr. Cummings will explore several aspects of the legal system.

Mr. Cummings has been an employee with the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador for 29 years, having served most recently as deputy minister of Justice and deputy attorney general. For two years he was deputy clerk of the Executive Council and secretary to Cabinet, and prior to that was deputy clerk of the Executive Council and associate secretary to Cabinet. He also served as assistant deputy minister (Civil Law and Related Services), Department of Justice where had worked earlier as general counsel. Mr. Cummings holds a bachelor of laws degree from Dalhousie University.
