Minister proclaims Girl Guide Membership Registration Week

Joan Burke, Minister Responsible for the Status of Women, is pleased to proclaim September 12-18, 2005 as Membership Registration Week for the Girl Guides of Canada-Guides du Canada in Newfoundland and Labrador.

�In honour of the 95th anniversary of Guiding in Canada, all girls and women in the province are being encouraged to become members and enjoy the opportunities for growth and personal development this wonderful organization has to offer,� said Minister Burke.

Girl Guides of Canada-Guides du Canada is the largest organization for girls and women in Canada, with almost 135,000 members � more than 108,000 girls and 26,000 adults. Guides Canada welcomes girls 5-17 years old and women over 18 to consider becoming a part of their organization.

�Guiding provides opportunities for girls to develop life skills and become empowered to become leaders and decision-makers,� said Minister Burke. �Guiding helps connect young women with their community and with the world-at-large. I encourage all girls and women in this province to contact their local Guide branch to find out more information about what this organization can do for your life.�

Girl Guides of Canada Membership Registration Week

BE IT KNOWN to whom these presents do concern:

WHEREAS the Mission of Girl Guides of Canada-Guides du Canada is to challenge members in their personal development and empower them to be responsible citizens; and

WHEREAS for 95 years, Girl Guides of Canada-Guides du Canada has been contributing to success among girls and women by providing programs and activities to encourage girls to reach their potential, give back to their communities through innovative service projects and become independent, kind, caring and confident women, all while having fun with their friends.

WHEREAS the Mission of Girl Guides of Canada-Guides du Canada is to be commended for it teaches personal values, respect for the environment, responsible citizenship and the principle of service;

BE IT RESOLVED THEREFORE that the province of Newfoundland and Labrador gratefully recognizes Girl Guides of Canada-Guides du Canada's valuable contribution to the well being of our province by proclaiming the week of September 12th to the 18th 2005, Girl Guides of Canada-Guides du Canada Membership Registration Week
