August 9, 2005 is Peacekeepers Day

Intergovernmental Affairs Minister Tom Marshall announced today that August 9, 2005 will be formally recognized as Peacekeepers Day throughout the Province of Newfoundland and Labrador .

Minister Marshall said, As a part of this years commitment to Year of the Veteran, it is important to commemorate the sacrifices of Canadian peacekeepers past and present who have consistently put themselves in danger to ensure the safety and freedom of others.

On August 9, 1974 , nine Canadian peacekeepers were killed when their transport plane was shot down over Syria , the greatest loss of Canadian peacekeepers in a single day.

Many Newfoundlanders and Labradorians have risked their lives to maintain peace in hostile environments throughout the world.  At this time, we join with other provinces in recognizing the tremendous contributions of our Canadian peacekeepers, Minister Marshall continued.  On August 9 please join me in commemorating Peacekeepers Day.

Approximately 125,000 Canadians have served in peacekeeping missions since 1947; over 100 Canadians have given their lives to the service.
