(Executive Council)
The following statement, on the
passing of former Premier Frank Moores, was issued today by His Honour,
the Honourable Edward Roberts, Lieutenant Governor of Newfoundland and
Labrador:
Frank Moores made an important and substantial contribution to
Newfoundland and Labrador. He was a central figure in our political
history and in the development of our political institutions.
Franks political career was relatively short, but it was noteworthy. He
became an important figure in the Progressive Conservative Party of
Canada during his one term as a Member of Parliament and was
instrumental in the successful efforts to end Joseph Smallwoods time as
Premier. And he was Premier of our Province for seven years.
I knew Frank well. I lead the Opposition during most of his seven years
as Premier. As leaders of our parties, we opposed each other in two
general elections, in 1972 and 1975. Frank and the Progressive
Conservatives won both.
Frank Moores was a gentlemen and a passionate Newfoundlander. He was an
extremely likeable man who met adversity with a smile and a joke. His
courageous fight against the disease that claimed his life won the
admiration of all who knew him. He will be remembered fondly because he
made Newfoundland and Labrador a better place for all.
Eve joins me in offering our sincere condolences to his wife Beth, his
children and all of his family.
