Remember our veterans on Memorial Day

Tom Marshall, Minister responsible for Intergovernmental Affairs and Minister of Justice and Attorney General, encouraged all Newfoundlanders and Labradorians today to remember the courageous efforts of our veterans on Memorial Day, July 1, 2005.

Minister Marshall said, "Although July 1 is now synonymous with Canada Day Celebrations, it also very important that we commemorate the contributions of our veterans, especially the members of the Newfoundland Regiment who fought and died at Beaumont Hamel during the opening day of the Battle of the Somme July 1, 1916."

Of the 801 members of the 1st Newfoundland Regiment who fought at Beaumont Hamel July 1, 1916 only 68 answered the roll call on the following day. It was truly a devastating day for the men who fought so bravely and for Newfoundland and Labrador.

Minister Marshall said, "This Memorial Day is very special as 2005 is the Year of the Veteran. On July 1st it is so important we honour and pay tribute to the men and women who have risked or given their lives for the freedom we enjoy today. I encourage everyone to take part in Memorial Day events happening in communities throughout the province. We must always remember our veterans and their sacrifice."

Minister Marshall continued, "On July 1, 2005 I hope everyone has safe and wonderful Memorial Day and Canada Day."
