Premier Williams meeting with New
England Governors In preparation for the
upcoming New England Governors-Eastern Canadian Premiers (NEG-ECP) conference,
Premier Danny Williams visited three New England states this week. The NEG-ECP
will be hosted by Premier Williams in St. John's from August 28-29. Governor
Donald L. Carcieri of Rhode Island will serve as co-chair of the event with
Premier Williams.
"This is a very exciting and important conference, and I want to ensure we have
a good turn-out of our colleagues from New England," said Premier Williams.
"Having previously met some of the other governors, I took this opportunity to
meet with Lieutenant Governor Healey of Massachusetts, Governor Baldacci of
Maine, and my co-chair Governor Carcieri from Rhode Island. It was a worthwhile
day and a half, and I took the opportunity to extend a personal invitation to
the governors and their officials. I look forward to welcoming the governors and
the eastern premiers for what is shaping up to be a very successful conference."
The NEG-ECP is a muti-lateral organization comprised of the five eastern
Canadian provinces: Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward
Island, New Brunswick and Quebec, and the six New England states: Maine,
Vermont, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Rhode Island and Connecticut. The focus
of the NEG-ECP is strengthening the ties within our region through cooperative
action on a wide range of issues including trade and economic development,
environmental and energy issues.
"There are so many areas of common interest between the New England states and
Atlantic Canada and Quebec," said Premier Williams. "We have many natural
synergies and several areas of common interest including oil and gas
development, energy supply and demand, border security and, of course, we have
extensive trade relations."
