Premier discusses Harbour Breton situation with Prime Minister

Danny Williams, Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador, yesterday spoke with Prime Minister Paul Martin to stress the importance of the federal government's involvement in finding a solution for the people and community of Harbour Breton.

"I have had numerous discussions with federal officials, including Minister Belinda Stronach, Federal Minister of Human Resources and Skills Development, and MP Bill Matthews over the past several weeks regarding this issue," said Premier Williams. "Last evening, I took the matter further and spoke directly to Prime Minister Martin regarding the situation facing the people of Harbour Breton. I impressed upon the Prime Minister the urgency of this situation and the need for federal assistance to help the community."

Premier Williams will be meeting tomorrow with a delegation from the community of Harbour Breton.

"I look forward to this meeting providing an opportunity to exchange some ideas with the people of Harbour Breton," said the Premier. "Our government has shown a commitment to the community and I want to discuss further action with the committee. We must work together to impress the seriousness of Harbour Breton's needs upon the federal government. Action must be taken now. We can not afford to have this matter pushed off any longer."

Premier Williams and his officials have held numerous discussions with federal officials, the community, and the union. The Premier has expressed his opinion that the federal government has a responsibility to the people of Harbour Breton that must be accepted sooner rather than later. "As a province, we have committed to help the community. Now Ottawa must do the same. Minister Stronach confirmed for me yesterday she will be meeting with MP Matthews and Minister Joe McGuire today to discuss the issue," added the Premier. "We look forward to a positive result for the people of Harbour Breton and the entire region."
