Premier expresses condolences at Pope�s passing

Premier Danny Williams today expressed profound sadness at the passing of His Holiness, Pope John Paul II.

"It is with great sorrow and deep regret that today we accept the passing of Pope John Paul II," said Premier Williams. "He was a courageous and caring individual, and an inspirational leader to millions around the world. He had a wonderful capacity to identify with the masses of people who followed him, and he was certainly beloved around the world for his compassion, character and strength of convictions."

Pope John Paul II passed away on April 2, 2005 in Rome at the age of 84. He visited the province in 1984.

"Newfoundlanders and Labradorians fondly remember his visit to this province in 1984, when he touched many lives," added the Premier. "On behalf of the people of Newfoundland and Labrador, I extend sincere and heartfelt condolences for the world�s loss of a truly great man."
