Premier Danny Williams today expressed his condolences to the families of the four RCMP officers who were fatally shot Thursday while on duty near Mayerthorpe, Alberta.

"I am deeply saddened by this senseless and devastating event," Premier Williams said. "I extend to the families, on behalf of government and all residents of Newfoundland and Labrador, our deepest sympathy for their tragic loss. We are all shocked by the violent circumstances and our thoughts and prayers are with the families and friends of the officers."

Flags at Confederation Building are at half-mast in tribute to the officers.

Justice Minister Tom Marshall also expressed his condolences to the families and friends, as well as to the extended police community throughout the country.

"We share in the shock and grief of RCMP and all peace officers throughout the country during this difficult time," Minister Marshall said.
