Water resources management division wins Atlantic award of excellence

Tom Osborne, Minister of Environment and Conservation, today announced that the department has been named the recipient of the 2005 ESRI Canada Award of Excellence for the Atlantic region.

ESRI Canada is the leading geographic information systems (GIS) provider in Canada. The ESRI Canada Award of Excellence is presented annually to one organization in five regions across the country for innovation in the application of GIS technology. The department was named a winner for the water resources management divisions drinking water quality GIS Internet application.

I wish to take this opportunity to extend congratulations to our water resources division on winning this prestigious award, said Minister Osborne. Our officials are to be commended for their efforts in the drinking water quality GIS Internet application, as well as their overall dedication and work in the area of water quality management.

The minister added: It is through the efforts and valuable expertise of such individuals in our department that we continue to make positive strides in ensuring safe drinking water for Newfoundlanders and Labradorians. Indeed, the GIS internet application represents another important step forward in our drinking water safety efforts.

The GIS Internet application allows drinking water quality data sharing between all four government departments involved in ensuring safe drinking water through the provinces Multi-Barrier Strategic Action Plan. The water resources division is also providing training to other government departments on using the GIS Internet application. The application is currently only available to government users, however there are plans to include a public portal in the near future.

Representatives from the water resources management travelled to Halifax, Nova Scotia to receive the award of excellence at an awards ceremony and participated in ESRI Canadas annual regional user conference where they showcased their application during a live demonstration. The event took place November 9-10.
