Mount Pearls residential curbside recycling program underway

The Minister of Environment and Conservation, Tom Osborne, and the Mayor of Mount Pearl, Steve Kent, along with the MHA for Mount Pearl, Dave Denine and Waterford Valley MHA, Harvey Hodder, have officially launched the new mandatory curbside recycling program for the City of Mount Pearl which is effective today.

Minister Osborne said he is delighted that the City of Mount Pearls curbside recycling program is underway. This is an important environmental initiative, whereby cardboard and paper will be collected for recycling during regular garbage collection making the program convenient for residents, said the minister. Congratulations to the City of Mount Pearl for its commitment in getting involved with such a valuable service that will protect our environment and help the province in its goal to divert the amount of waste going to our landfills by 50 per cent. I am very pleased that we were able to partner with the city to provide residents with such a valuable program.

The paper and cardboard curbside recycling collection service is being provided to all households in the Mount Pearl area. The curbside program requires residents to place recyclable materials, such as newspapers, flyers, glossy magazines, telephone books, office papers, soft covered books, corrugated cardboard, file folders and catalogues, in clear plastic bags and place them on the curbside along with their regular garbage.

We're very excited about the introduction of household recycling in Mount Pearl, said Mayor Kent. As community leaders, we have a responsibility to promote sound environmental practices. I think the time is right for this program, and I'm confident that our citizens will embrace this initiative.

Mr. Denine said: It is very encouraging and exciting to see the district of Mount Pearl now in the position to recycle paper and cardboard products. I commend government, the City of Mount Pearl and the Multi-Materials Stewardship Board (MMSB) for continuing to show leadership and taking action to protecting our environment.

Mr. Hodder said: "I am delighted with the mandatory cardboard and paper recycling program taking place in the City of Mount Pearl which will also include a part of Waterford Valley. This is the beginning of a good environmental initiative for the community and shows commitment to a healthier environment.

The Department of Environment and Conservation and MMSB partnered with the City of Mount Pearl in the new curbside recycling program. The MMSB provided funding to assist with the initial capital investment for the recycling initiative and also supported the city in their development of a public education campaign to educate residents about the program.
