Minister launches annual No Fees, No Fines Vehicle Emissions Clinics

Environment and Conservation Minister Tom Osborne officially kicked off the annual No Fees, No Fines Vehicle Emissions Clinic at the Village Mall Parking Lot in St. Johns this afternoon. The Vehicle Emissions Clinic provides motorists with a free tailpipe exhaust emissions test and gives them helpful tips on how to keep the emissions level low for the life of their vehicle.

Vehicle emissions are one of the largest contributors to air pollution, said Minister Osborne. A key step in reducing those emissions is through public education and awareness. The vehicle emissions clinic is a great way to increase awareness of these emissions which have a negative impact on our environment.  I encourage motorists to participate in the clinic and do their part to help protect the environment.

The three-day Vehicle Emissions Clinic is being held at the Village Mall Parking Lot, St. Johns , today and at the Wal Mart parking lot, Mount Pearl , Wednesday and Thursday, August 3 and 4. The clinic runs from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.

The No Fees, No Fines slogan reminds motorists that these clinics are free and there is no fine.  For a vehicle that does fail the emissions test, motorists will be given suggestions or recommendations for improvement.

Paul Thomey, executive director of the Lung Association of Newfoundland and Labrador , said the Lung Association is proud to be a partner in the Lets Drive Green Vehicle Emissions Inspection Clinics in Newfoundland and Labrador .  The clinics are a great way for people to learn about how they can reduce their vehicle emissions, thus helping to improve air quality and protect the air that we all breathe.

Catherine Allix, project coordinator for Smart Taxis Encouraging Environmental Respect (STEER), is pleased to be partnering with the Lung Association and other partners to provide these vehicle inspection emissions clinics. It is a great way for drivers to see and learn about what comes from their vehicles, and to think about emissions and the effect our driving habits have on them.

No Fees, No Fines Vehicle Emissions Clinics have been held throughout Newfoundland and Labrador since 1989.

The vehicle emissions clinics are sponsored by the provincial Department of Environment and Conservation, Environment Canada, the Lung Association of Newfoundland and Labrador and STEER.
